La Liga: Ronald Koeman talks Messi and backs Antoine Griezmann after Betis win
Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman talks Messi and has backed forward Antoine Griezmann to give match-winning performances in the future following his lacklustre performance in the 5-2 win against Real Betis on Saturday, in La Liga.
FC Barcelona manager Koeman has backed the French World Cup winner to improve on the back of his lacklustre performance in the game.
Koeman Backs Griezmann
“I hope he continues to work like he is working,” said Koeman backing French superstar. “To miss opportunities you have to be there. We must highlight his character, to keep working. He knows perfectly well that he has missed a penalty, and some chances, but it means he is always there to score.”
The goal in a game of Spanish first division La Liga was just Griezmann’s second for Barcelona in nine appearances in 2020-21 season.
FC Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has explained the reason why he left the star man of the club, Lionel Messi, out of his starting XI for Saturday’s clash against Real Betis.
However, the captain started on the bench but came on at half-time with the score at 1-1 and led his team to a 5-2 sound-victory at the Camp Nou over the weekend.
Koeman also admitted that Messi hadn’t been quite 100 percent before the game and that’s why he wasn’t included in his starting XI.
“We spoke with Leo, who ended the Dynamo Kyiv game with a small problem and wasn’t in shape to play from the start. He was on the bench in case we needed him. If he’s good physically, he plays from the start.”
Messi answers his critics
The magician Messi also gave a resounding answer to those suggesting his performances this season have been evidence of his decline.
“Leo finished the match against Kyiv with some problems,” said Koeman. “He wasn’t in a position to play in the first half but we talked about him being on the bench and said he would come on if he felt good. He’s a player who in principle always plays, but today he didn’t because of some minor problems.”
Atleti to the top of the table
On the other hand in the Spanish top flight, Atletico Madrid jumped to the top of La Liga on Saturday with a 4-0 thrashing of Cadiz.
